God Created Complex Life – Summary

In the God Created Life thread we saw that to fully understand the origin of life we must fully understand the origin of the cell.  In this God Created Complex Life thread we start at the other end of the spectrum with plants, animals and humans but quickly realize that what distinguishes one from another is also determined within the cell.  It’s the genes stored in our DNA that control every aspect of life.

Surprisingly, scientists have determined that genes contain information and the cell uses that information to create proteins and other cellular components.  And when they say “information” they mean the same type that we see, use and take for granted every day.  Specifically, genes store, transmit, communicate and use finely tuned, coded content in a manner that’s exactly analogous to how information is coded, stored, transmitted, communicated and used everywhere else in the world.

It turns out this is extremely important – both for how every aspect of the cell functions and for how we explain the origin of life.  For, you see, no origin of life explanation is complete without also explaining the origin of the finely tuned information found in DNA.

When we look closely at the information stored in DNA, we recognize three important facts:

1. We see that the strings of nucleotide bases included in DNA is both “complex” and “specified”.  The implication of that is the information wasn’t created by random chance mutations over billions of years and that the information has a very specific function, has meaning and has a purpose
2. Scientists who study energy, called thermodynamics, have found that it was impossible for the information in DNA to have been created by random chance in the early earth
3. Dr. Stephen Meyer, in his book Signature In The Cell; DNA And The Evidence For Intelligent Design, points out, “Indeed, our uniform experience affirms that specified information – whether inscribed in hieroglyphics, written in a book, encoded in a radio signal or produced in a simulation experiment – always arises from an intelligent source, from a mind and not a strictly material process.”

 

There’s no known physics, chemistry or biology that can explain how complex and specified information was first created on the early earth yet, we know when we see signs of finely tuned information, that it was created by an intelligent agent.  Therefore the best explanation for the origin of the complex and specified information with meaning and purpose included in DNA and the protein is intelligence.  The only intelligence that can create such a finely tuned information with meaning and purpose at a molecular level within every cell within every living organism is God.
