You’re In Good Company

Renowned Scientists Believe In God

To Those Who Don’t Believe In God or Who Are Skeptical

There’s no shame in knowing and believing God exists, God created the universe and God created life.  In fact, if you believe the scientific facts and evidence proving these things about God, you’d be in good company.

Antony Flew was one of the most influential and outspoken atheists of the late 20th century.  His 1976 book, The Presumption of Atheism And Other Essays, was among his most influential works.  However, Flew changed his mind completely and, in 2007, published There Is a God: How the World’s Most Notorious Atheist Changed His Mind.

Here are a few quotes from that 2007 book:

“Science spotlights three dimensions of nature that point to God. The first is the fact that nature obeys laws. The second is the dimension of life, of intelligently organized and purpose-driven beings, which arose from matter. The third is the very existence of nature. But it is not science alone that guided me. I have also been helped by a renewed study of the classical philosophical arguments.”

“I now believe that the universe was brought into existence by an infinite Intelligence. I believe that this universe’s intricate laws manifest what scientists have called the Mind of God. I believe that life and reproduction originate in a divine Source. Why do I believe this, given that I expounded and defended atheism for more than a half century? The short answer is this: this is the world picture, as I see it, that has emerged from modern science.”

“I now believe there is a God…I now think it [the evidence] does point to a creative Intelligence almost entirely because of the DNA investigations. What I think the DNA material has done is that it has shown, by the almost unbelievable complexity of the arrangements which are needed to produce life, that intelligence must have been involved in getting these extraordinarily diverse elements to work together.”

“We have all the evidence we need in our immediate experience and that only a deliberate refusal to ‘look’ is responsible for atheism of any variety.”

If you don’t believe Flew, how about this guy?:

“When I began my career as a cosmologist some twenty years ago, I was a convinced atheist. I never in my wildest dreams imagined that one day I would be writing a book purporting to show that the central claims of Judeo-Christian theology are in fact true, that these claims are straightforward deductions of the laws of physics as we now understand them. I have been forced into these conclusions by the inexorable logic of my own special branch of physics.”

  • Professor of Mathematical Physics Frank Tipler, author of The Physics of Christianity and The Physics of Immortality. Tipler is one of the two founders of the famous anthropic principle regarding the fundamental physical constants necessary for the origin of life.

Or how about this guy?

“Astronomers now find they have painted themselves into a corner because they have proven, by their own methods, that the world began abruptly in an act of creation to which you can trace the seeds of every star, every planet, every living thing in this cosmos and on the earth. And they have found that all this happened as a product of forces they cannot hope to discover….  That there are what I or anyone would call supernatural forces at work is now, I think, a scientifically proven fact.”

  • Robert Jastrow, the astronomer and physicist who founded NASA’s Goddard Institute of Space Studies

Or how about this guy?

“The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you.”
“In the history of science, ever since the famous trial of Galileo, it has repeatedly been claimed that scientific truth cannot be reconciled with the religious interpretation of the world. Although I am now convinced that scientific truth is unassailable in its own field, I have never found it possible to dismiss the content of religious thinking as simply part of an outmoded phase in the consciousness of mankind, a part we shall have to give up from now on. Thus in the course of my life I have repeatedly been compelled to ponder on the relationship of these two regions of thought, for I have never been able to doubt the reality of that to which they point.”

  • Werner Heisenberg, who was awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize in Physics for the creation of quantum mechanics

We could do this all day.  These are just a few of the hundreds of scientists who are quoted or cited on this God and Science site ascribing to their belief in God based on the scientific evidence.  Seriously, there’s no shame in believing God exists, God created the universe and God created life.  Science exploration doesn’t stop there.  It simply moves from purposeless discovery to a more purposeful path.

If you’re questioning or skeptical about all this yet have not had a chance to pursue the facts, then follow the same path of other science greats before you.
